Trip Overview
The Namo Buddha to Panauti Day Hike is a perfect short escape from Kathmandu that blends spirituality, culture, and nature into one enriching experience. Located southeast of the Kathmandu Valley, this hike takes you from one of Nepal’s most sacred Buddhist sites to one of its best-preserved traditional Newari towns.
The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Namo Buddha. This peaceful monastery complex sits on a hilltop surrounded by prayer flags and forested hills. It is believed to be one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Nepal. Visitors can explore the monastery grounds, spin prayer wheels, and observe monks engaged in daily rituals and chanting.
From Namo Buddha, the hike gradually descends through terraced farmland, small settlements, and green hillsides. Along the way, you will experience authentic rural life and enjoy beautiful views of the countryside.
After approximately three hours of walking, you reach the historic town of Panauti. Situated at the confluence of two rivers, Panauti is known for its medieval temples, traditional brick houses, and rich Newari culture. Despite being close to Kathmandu, the town has preserved its heritage and traditional lifestyle.
One of the major attractions is the Indreshwor Mahadev Temple, built in the 14th century. Nearby, you can also visit the Radhakrishna Temple, Bramhayani Temple, and a small cultural museum located within the temple complex.
After exploring Panauti, you will drive back to Kathmandu, completing a fulfilling day of hiking and cultural discovery.
