Nepal Visa Information

Foreign travelers can obtain a Nepal visa either before arrival at a Nepalese embassy or diplomatic mission abroad, or upon arrival at designated entry points in Nepal. Visa on arrival is available at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu and at major land border crossings including Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Gaddachauki (India border), and Kodari (China border). Visa renewals can be processed at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu.

 

Visa Requirements

To obtain a Nepal visa, the following are generally required:

  • A valid passport with at least six months validity.

  • Passport-sized photographs (light background recommended).

  • Visa fee payment, which must be made in cash in accepted currencies: US Dollar, Euro, Pound Sterling, Canadian Dollar, Australian Dollar, Swiss Franc, Hong Kong Dollar, Singapore Dollar, or Japanese Yen.

Gratis Visa (Free Visa)

  • Children under 10 years are eligible for a free visa.

  • First-time SAARC visitors staying up to 30 days within a calendar year (January–December) may also receive a gratis visa.

  • Indian nationals do not require a visa when entering Nepal. However, air travelers must carry either a passport or a valid election card.

 

Special Visa Notes

Certain nationalities are not eligible for visa on arrival. This includes travelers from Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan.

 

Visa Extension

Tourists may extend their stay in Nepal, but the maximum allowed duration within a calendar year is 150 days. Extensions can be applied for at the Department of Immigration.

 

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for all travelers visiting Nepal. It is highly recommended that the policy covers:

  • Accidents, injuries, and illness (including pre-existing medical conditions)

  • Emergency evacuation, including helicopter or air ambulance if required

  • Personal liability

Travel insurance is crucial in Nepal due to potential high costs for medical emergencies, rescue operations, or unexpected events during trekking and travel.
