Rara Lake Trek – Overview

Rara Lake Trek takes you to the most remote and untouched region of Nepal, located in the Mugu district of Karnali Province. Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal and is often called the “Queen of Lakes” because of its deep blue water, peaceful surroundings, and breathtaking Himalayan backdrop.

Surrounded by dense pine forests and snow-capped peaks, Rara Lake lies inside Rara National Park, making it a protected and naturally preserved destination. Unlike popular trekking routes such as Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, Rara offers complete solitude, silence, and raw natural beauty.

This trek is ideal for travelers who want to experience Nepal’s wilderness away from crowded tourist trails.

The lake is surrounded by forests, hills, and mountains, creating a calm and magical atmosphere. Its crystal-clear blue water reflects the surrounding peaks, making it one of the most photogenic destinations in Nepal.

Location of Rara Lake

Rara Lake is situated in Mugu District, Karnali Province, in western Nepal. It lies within Rara National Park, approximately 300 km from Kathmandu.

Because of its remote location, the region remains untouched and less crowded, allowing trekkers to enjoy pure nature and wildlife.

Elevation and Size

  • Altitude: 2,990 meters (9,810 ft)
  • Length: 5.1 km
  • Width: 2.7 km
  • Depth: Around 167 meters
  • Area: 10.8 sq. km

The lake remains cool throughout the year due to its high altitude. Small rivers and streams feed into the lake, and it drains into the Mugu Karnali River.
